JUNE 2010: Energy Efficient Lighting

Oct 28th 2015 Staff

Installing energy efficient lighting can make a noticeable difference in your utility bills, since traditional incandescent lights burn hot and need to be replaced frequently. When you trade incandescents for compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), you'll reduce the heat output of your lights while using 75 percent less energy to illuminate them.

Invest in Interior and Exterior Energy Efficient Lighting

Since CFLs are essentially smaller versions of incandescent bulbs, they can be used for virtually any standard application, including indoor track light fixtures and outdoor deck lighting. While the bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, they are safe for household use when installed and disposed of properly.

To further improve the energy efficiency of your home's lighting, install inexpensive dimmer switches in living areas, bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Dimmers allow you to change the mood of your room while saving bulb life, making them a cost-effective, design-savvy investment.

A third way to save on your energy bill while being environmentally responsible is to utilize motion sensor accent and floodlights around the exterior of your home. Designed with a photocell that allows them to turn on with movement, this energy efficient lighting choice is also an effective security measure. Remember, however, that if you're using CFLs in your exterior lights, you may need to purchase a bulb with a cold weather ballast. Most standard CFLs won't turn on when the temperature is below freezing.
