The Story of Horton’s Family Bear
Once upon a time, 16 years ago, Hortons Home Lighting and Ace Hardware sponsored a summer art project through the local business association. The idea was for downtown La Grange “goers” to visit local businesses and enjoy the animal statues decorated and displayed around town. Hortons, being a business dedicated to making a difference in our community, joined in on the fun and chose our Horton’s Bear! Just 3 years prior, the Horton’s family came together to make a difference in the fight against cancer when one of our co-workers was diagnosed with this terrible disease. Pam Herts lost her battle to breast cancer at the age of 31. Pam - a mother, a daughter, a sister, a co-worker, and a friend - left behind a 1-year-old son who would never know his mother, a family that was devastated by the loss, and a team of co-workers whose lives would forever be changed. Pam’s story inspired the creation of The H Foundation and our annual Goombay Bash fundraiser to find a cure for cancer.
Our Horton’s family knows that everyone is touched by this disease, so we set our goals to make the Goombay Bash a casual, Caribbean-themed event for all who wanted to make a difference in the fight against cancer. We came dressed in our Hawaiian shirts, shorts, flip-flops and flower leis, and together we exceeded our fundraising goals and created a movement. When our Horton’s Bear joined our family, of course she wanted to get in on the fun! So, we dressed her up in her finest Goombay attire and for the past 16 years she has been a representation of the Goombay Bash and our mission to find a cure for cancer. 19 years after The H Foundation was founded, our entire Hortons “family” has helped The H Foundation raise nearly $9 million to support basic science cancer research at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and make an impact in OUR community. CANCER IS PERSONAL TO ALL OF US.
Our Horton’s Bear has made such an impact as our mascot in the fight against cancer, we want to honor her by officially giving her a name! This is where we need your help! We need our Horton’s community to help “Name Our Bear”. Can you assist us with this fun project?
Now through July 31st we will be accepting name suggestions in store and through email to email@example.com. Please include your name, email, phone number, and your suggestion for her name. When you visit Horton’s Home Lighting and Ace Hardware in La Grange, take a selfie and post it on social with the #OurHortonsBear.
Every suggestion entered will be eligible for a chance to win:
• $100 Hortons Gift Card
• 4 passes to the La Grange Theatre
• $20 Gift Card to the Hot Dog & Burger Company
• Goombay gift package.
Winner will be chosen on August 1st! In the meantime, continue to follow everything we do with our Hortons bear leading up to the Goombay Bash.
